Am I being authentic? -- January from B3

January 2026

Hi Reader,

First of all, I'm overjoyed to launch Agate Initiative, a fiscally sponsored project of the Social Good Fund, aimed at bringing more powerful team development offerings to the nonprofit sector.

The pilot is free to nonprofit teams who want to jump in!

Please take a look at our new website, follow the intitiative on LinkedIn, and share with your colleagues by forwarding this email.

The first cohort launches in early February, and the application is open! (Priority deadline is next Friday, January 23, so please apply soon if you're interested.)

On Teams

Helping others feel HEARD

One change my spouse and I have worked on over the years is the following:

Rather than saying, "You didn't say that," we say, "I didn't hear you say that."

This is a small but powerful shift: it removes blame and creates space for next steps.

Whether or not someone said something becomes less relevant, and the focus instead is on the power of being heard.

The definitions of "hear" according to Merriam Webster include terms like "perceive of," "become aware," and "gain knowledge of by hearing;" whereas "listen" means "pay attention to sound."

The difference between hearing and listening lies in the effort to process and interpret the information that travels into your ear canals.

Recently, I joined my family's congregation in Dallas for a workshop with Resetting the Table where we worked on listening to get to a "bingo:" helping someone feel so heard and seen that they say "Bingo! You got me."

To get to BINGO, you have to listen so someone can be heard.

When discussing issues that cross political divides, this can be challenging to say the least.

And while this sounds similar to Active Listening, the Bingo approach encourages putting ideas into the listener's words (rather than the speaker's) to emphasize processing of what the speaker has said.

Coaching Supervision

How can I be authentic when I'm holding back?

The last couple of years have challenged my understanding of authenticity.

I've struggled to bring my whole self to my colleagues and clients, even as I work with teams to help them be more authentic with each other.

My journey with this paradox has been draining, but I'm grateful for access to supervision to help me process, reconcile—and HEAL.

What I've learned: authenticity isn't all or nothing. We can choose what and when to share.

Questions to ask yourself:
Am I aligned with my values?
Am I honoring myself rather than acting for others?

Focusing on these questions is the hard part — and clearing the space to truly explore them.

If you haven't yet explored coaching supervision as part of your self-care and professional development as a coach, then this is your sign to start in 2026.

Email me if you want to explore joining a cohort beginning in January/February - or explore 1:1 supervision.

On a Personal Note

Fresh tracks

This break, we had the joy of a week in Tahoe a friend's cabin, and being held still by massive amount of snow.

Our dog Shadow loved making fresh tracks in the snow and finding a spot to rest and protect us.

I like to think she was reminding us that she protects OUR rest, our reminder to pause, witness, and be still.

What did you notice as you stepped into 2026? Hit reply and let me know - I'd love to hear.

Even better: let's do a coffee chat!

July 2026 Hi Reader, I just got back from three days alone at the coast — my once-a-year retreat to think hard about the year ahead. I went in expecting to plan. What I actually did was notice how much had shifted under me while I was busy keeping things moving. I kept circling around the word coherence. Not "am I doing enough," but "do the pieces still hold together?" It turns out that's the question I keep hearing from the people I work with, too — both the teams and the coaches. Which is...

June 2026 Hi Reader, Since we last talked, I've been to San Diego, Riverside, Puerto Vallarta, and all over the Bay Area. I love the whirlwind — the variety, the people, the energy of being in many rooms at once. And I'm also craving something rooted. Ground under my feet. A morning that doesn't start in a different zip code. I'm sitting with both of those things right now, without trying to resolve them. Which, it turns out, feels very on-theme for this month. For Team Leaders The burnout...

May 2026 Hi Reader, A few weeks ago, I floated over the pyramids at Teotihuacan in a hot air balloon. Years ago, in a meditative visioning exercise, I drew hot air balloons — something about lift, about rising high enough to see the whole shape of something. And there I was, finally in one. But what stayed with me wasn't just the view. It was what I learned afterward at the National Museum in Mexico City. The Teotihuacan we walked through isn't ancient ruins. The city burned around 750 CE....
